Luiz Pereira winner of the ENEN2021 PhD Award

10 September 2021

Congratulations to Luiz Pereira! He was awarded the 2021 ENEN (European Nuclear Education Network) PhD Prize for his joint PhD carried out at CEMEF under the direction of Franck Pigeonneau and at CEA Marcoule.

His thesis work focused on the "Mechanisms of oxygen bubble formation in a glass melt in the nuclear waste vitrification context".

The award was presented at the International Conference Nuclear Energy for New Europe, which was held in Bled, Slovenia, from September 6 to 9, 2021.

The award is also supported by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the Jo¸ef Stefan Institute in Slovenia.
Twelve candidates competed for the final from Politécnico di Torino, Politécnico di Milano, CEA (Marcoule, Cadarache, Saclay), MINES Paris, and the University of Ghent.
Vitrification, liquid metal detour, physical metallurgy and solid mechanics were some of the topics discussed during this doctoral event.

Luiz Pereira defended his thesis on November 12, 2020. Luiz Pereira had already seen his PhD work awarded with the 3rd Pierre Laffitte Prize in 2019.

He is currently working as a post-doctoral researcher at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (Germany) with Professor Donald B. Dingwell. He is studying the three-phase system of silicates, bubbles and molten silicates, bubbles and crystals through experiments and codes.
